Pterostylis tasmanica (Orchidaceae): Bearded Greenhood

Home

Taken at Wonthaggi, 21st October 2002.

All greenhoods are pseudo-copulators, emitting pheromones to attract specific male insects and all have an irritable labellum that snaps back to imprison the insect within the hood where it must struggle free, past the pollen exchange systems. Tasmanica is uncommon. The specimen I photographed was covered with a steel cage put there by a now deceased orchidologist Sherree Collins. The locals cleared a memorial track including a study area for Collins. I found the cage by chance earlier.
